Fever 333 Frontman Jason Aalon Butler Turns Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" Into Reggae

Chart Attack's new album brings in one of rock's most explosive frontmen for its boldest reinvention

"Killing in the Name" is one of the most furious songs of the 1990s. On Age Against the Machine, out October 30, Chart Attack turned it into reggae, and they brought in Jason Aalon Butler to sing it.

The Aurora, Illinois, pop-punk band chose Butler for his presence as much as his voice.

"There's no one left in rock who even comes close to the energy and stage presence of Zack de la Rocha, except Jason," says Chart Attack. "We wanted to give him the chance to show that talent on a reggae track."

Butler has spent two decades earning that comparison. The Inglewood, California, native fronted post-hardcore band letlive. from 2002 to 2017, and their shows became known as some of the most unhinged in the scene. In 2017 he launched Fever 333, a rap-rock project built on activism and direct action that carries the confrontational spirit Rage Against the Machine made famous. He has also recorded with Pierce the Veil, Skrillex, The Used and Papa Roach.

Swapping the original's crushing riffs for a reggae groove puts the whole song on Butler's shoulders. It's a different kind of showcase for a singer best known for chaos, and the kind of left turn Chart Attack are known for.

The band perform anonymously as silver-suited old men, and they rebuild familiar hits as "original covers." Age Against the Machine covers eleven '90s anthems, with guest appearances from Butler, Candlebox's Kevin Martin and Bowling for Soup's Jaret Reddick. award-winning producer Jason Livermore mixed and mastered it at the Blasting Room (Rise Against, NOFX).

Candlebox Frontman Kevin Martin Honors Grunge With Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box"

The Seattle singer joins Chart Attack to take on one of the '90s' toughest choruses

Few '90s choruses are as punishing to sing as the one in Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box." When Chart Attack chose it for their new album Age Against the Machine, out October 30, they went looking for a voice that had been there the first time.

"Kevin is one of the last true legends of the grunge era," says Chart Attack. "'Man in the Box' has such a challenging chorus, so we reached out to someone who could actually sing it. Someone who was there in the '90s and was friends with those bands."

Martin was there. He formed Candlebox in Seattle in 1991, just as the city became the center of the rock world. Their self-titled 1993 debut on Maverick Records went quadruple platinum and sold more than four million copies. Its single "Far Behind," written after losing friends to heroin, hit No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining rock radio songs of the decade.

More than 30 years later, Candlebox is still going, with a ninth album and touring into 2027 already announced. Martin brings that history to a song from the same scene that raised him. Alice in Chains released "Man in the Box" in 1990, and it became the band's breakthrough the year before Candlebox formed.

The connection goes back further than the album. Martin was an early supporter of Chart Attack, and the band's shirt has become one of his favorites. He's worn it on stage at his own shows, which is how a Candlebox concert ends up with a silver-suited pop-punk band's logo in the spotlight.

Bowling for Soup's Jaret Reddick Brings the Sunshine to Blind Melon's "No Rain"

The Grammy-nominated pop-punk frontman sings one of his all-time favorite songs with Chart Attack

Jaret Reddick didn't need to be sold on "No Rain." The Bowling for Soup frontman counts Blind Melon's hit, and the band's 1995 album Soup, among his favorites. That's a fitting pick for a man whose band has "Soup" in its name.

So when Chart Attack chose the song for Age Against the Machine, out October 30, they knew who should sing it.

The match makes sense on paper too. "No Rain" was the sunniest hit of the grunge era: a sweet, strange song about not wanting to get out of bed that topped the Modern Rock chart in 1993. Reddick has built a career on that kind of big-hearted pop hook. He formed Bowling for Soup in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1994. "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" earned the band a 2003 Grammy nomination, and "1985," "Almost" and "High School Never Ends" followed. Millions more know his voice from "Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day," the Phineas and Ferb theme Bowling for Soup co-wrote and performed.

It's a natural fit for Chart Attack too. The Aurora, Illinois, band perform anonymously as silver-suited old men and rebuild familiar hits as fast, fun pop-punk "original covers," the same mix of heart and humor Bowling for Soup made famous.

"We want people to celebrate music and have fun," says Chart Attack.

"No Rain" is the shortest track on the record, and one of its happiest.
